Duo ran into the coffee shop and crouched behind the counter, almost losing his balance. He steadied himself on the first thing at his reach, which happened to be a pair of legs. He closed his eyes and grimaced expecting the person to kick him away as he would have done if a stranger decided to attach himself to his legs, but nothing happened.
Seconds later Duo heard the bell over the door of the coffee shop jingle and held his breath.
"Can I help you?" A voice said above him.
"No." That was definitely Trowa. Seconds later the bell jingled again.
"He's gone," said the same voice from above and Duo slowly raised his head. He almost lost his balance again.
"Hi, erm, thank you!" Duo said as he tried to stand up. He had never seen eyes quite like this. The man was very handsome and looked quite amused.
"I hope you are not a robber."
"Nah," Duo grinned. "Name is Duo Maxwell. That was just Trowa. He's a little angry with me at the moment."
The other man just raised an eyebrow so Duo continued. "I kind of sent the guy he fancies some handcuffs in his name, nothing big."
The man smirked. "I can see why your friend didn't look happy. I'm Heero."
"He'll get over it. Tomorrow after he and Quatre put those cuffs to good use he'll be thanking me."
Heero was quiet for a moment, just looking at Duo in a way that made him slightly uncomfortable. "Coffee?" he asked finally.
Duo smiled and nodded.

"You are still alive," Heero said when Duo walked into the coffee shop two days later. This time he chose to sit at the bar instead of hiding behind the counter. Heero thought it was improvement.
"Of course I am! Trowa is too busy with Quatre to kill me. Can I have a doughnut? Anyway, in a couple of days I'll demand they throw me the appropriate parade to thank me for finally getting them together."
Heero put the doughnut in front of Duo and served him a cup of coffee without being asked: strong, just a little milk and two sugars.
"Anyway," Duo said when he had eaten half his doughnut. "I wanted to thank you for covering for me the other day, not kicking me and all…"
"Kicking you?" Heero tried to hide a smile. There was powdered sugar on the tip of Duo's nose.
"Yeah and covering for me and all. So I wanted to ask you if…" Heero leaned forward and brushed the sugar from Duo's nose with his index finger. Duo blinked at him puzzled.
"Sugar," Heero said and showed Duo the finger before licking it.
It took a moment for Duo to blink and start talking again. The voice was a little high when he finally said, "Dinner?"
Heero smiled. "I get off at seven."

Duo hadn't planed on sleeping with him. He never did on the first date but dinner had been wonderful and Heero was sexy and attentive and Duo couldn't stop smiling when he was with him. So he had taken Heero home, half afraid that all the anticipation would make them both too nervous, or at least him because Heero didn't seem to get nervous of anything.
But the sex had been perfect.
And then Heero had stayed. He had put his arms around Duo, kissed his lips softly and stayed.
In the morning when Duo woke up still in Heero's arms he couldn't believed he had actually cuddled.

It had been a week and still Duo hadn't come back to the coffee shop. Heero tried not to be restless. The night together had been perfect, from the moment they headed to dinner in Heero's motorcycle to the coffee and breakfast Heero had cooked the next day. They had parted smiling, with a kiss on the lips and a "see you later." But Duo hadn't come back.
Heero supposed he could go to Duo's house but that would be too imposing and he had spent the last week torturing himself for not asking for Duo's phone number.
He wasn't sure what it was about Duo that had him like this but even Relena had said she hadn't seen him smile this much before. Heero pursed his lips and made a decision.

Duo felt the urge to hide when he saw Heero waiting for him on the front stairs of building. It was too late anyway and with a nervous smile he approached the other man.
"Hi, Heero."
"You never came back." There was a hurt tone in his voice, subtle but it was there and Duo felt like mud for hiding.
"I've been bu—" but he couldn't tell the lie so he sighed. "I've been hiding."
"You do that a lot."
Duo sat down on the steps. "I'm sorry, Heero. This," he gestured to the space between them, "this is new to me."
Heero looked expectant "And?"
"And I don't know how to handle it."
Hero sat down beside him. "Why does there have to be something to handle?" he asked after a moment.
Duo shrugged. "There always is."
Heero put his arms slowly around Duo's waist and kissed him on the lips. "It's not that complicated."
"And if it is?" Duo wouldn't admit that he was nervous.
Heero smiled. "We'll make it work."
It took a moment but Duo smiled back. He believed him.

They had slept together again but this time Duo had come to the coffee shop the next day and the one after that and Heero hadn't forgotten to ask Duo's phone number. Things were good.
When the bell at the door jingled Heero looked up hopefully. It wasn't Duo but a blond man that headed straight for the counter.
"What can I get you?" Heero asked.
The man looked at him and smiled. "Actually," he said, "I have something for you."
Heero frowned which only made the man's smile brighten. He took a gift-wrapped box from his briefcase and put it on the counter. "For you," he said. "Just returning a favor." And with that he turned around and left.
Heero looked at the box for a moment before unwrapping it. There was a card taped to the lid.
Heero and Duo, we hope you both enjoy these as much as we did. Love, Trowa and Quatre
Inside the box there was a pair of handcuffs.
