I have a question for you thecnology savvy people. I have a MacBook and I'm thinking of buying an external HD. What do I need to know. The good, the bad and the ugly? Recomendations and stuff? Please help?

LaCie makes great external hard drives. I'm on my 2nd one and have no complaints.

I guess it all depends on what kind of storage you're looking for.

Of course, for drool-worthiness there is the new Time Capsule, Apple's new wireless external HD that also serves as a base station. *drool*

They are offering me a LaCie, actually. So it works well? not too noisy? What do you use it for? Store videos and music? Sorry for the 100 questions ^^;;

we use it to store anime, pictures, and back-ups of our systems.

it's not too noisy, no.

I have 3 LaCie HDs and never had a problem. And my best friend who has a Mac, too, has LaCie also and she likes it.

^_^ Good luck with finding what you need.

Thank you! I think I'm leaning for the LaCie one, looks cool.

Something just came up to my mind: Would it really be a 100% safe to store information down on a wireless hard drive? I've known of some acquaintances, not that clever, btw, who manage to crack into their neighbours' wireless protocols, leeching out some Internet for free.

No lo pongo en español porque creo que ahí en mi inglés elemental se entiende algo, y pues que nos aclaren... ^^U

I'm not sure, anyway, the one I'm thinking of buying isn't wireless, not that Time Capsule isn't drool worthy...

Curioso.

Seagate or Maxtor. They're pretty much the same thing, just different names. We've never had any problems out of that one before. Western Digital, however, is nothing but trouble. At least we've had lots of trouble out of them. You just need to make sure whatever you get is Mac compatible. I know around here, Staples has a kit that can convert any HD to Mac compatible and it only costs around $20.
