Real Butterflies
Rating: PG
Pairing: 5xR
Summary: "Have you ever seen a real butterfly?"
For
haraamis. Merry Christmas!
----
She let her eyes glance to the side and saw the little yellow butterfly that had caught her eye. The wings were flapping at a fast rhythm but the movements seemed slow, almost paused.
"Have you ever seen a real butterfly?"
Wufei looked up from his book and followed her gaze to the window. "Yes. In China."
"I didn't think you had time for that." Relena turned her back on the window and focused instead on Wufei. He looked relaxed with a book on his lap and glasses perched on the top of his nose. He still wore his hair on a ponytail, though Relena didn't lose hope that one day he would let it down out of the bedroom.
"We didn't fight all the time."
She nodded. There had to be time for other things, even during a war. Time for Heero and her to dance, for Quatre and Trowa to play together, for Duo to joke, but she hadn't known what Wufei had done with his time.
"I meditated," he said as if reading her mind. He did that from time to time, answer unasked questions, hold her when she silently wished he did.
"And you saw butterflies," she added with a smile. "Real ones." The butterfly at the window was flying still. Relena moved her hand to the controls and the view changed to a sunset over the mountains.
"You should turn it off. See what's really out there."
The colonies were there, gray, metallic, artificial and beautiful in their own way. There were no butterflies on the colony streets, no artificial rain that day and the time was scheduled to be night, so only the lights of the buildings could be seen.
Wufei hugged her from behind and when he spoke his lips were almost touching her ear. "Now you've seen the colonies, the real ones." She could feel him smile. "Or at least part of them."
She turned around and kissed him. "I'll see more of them later. That's not how I wish to spend my time right now." And with practiced fingers she let his hair down.
