The thing she remembers the most about that afternoon were the white roses. Quite a small detail in a richly decorated room but still that's the image that stuck on Relena's mind, like a snapshot she sees every time she thinks about Venice. Three white roses in a vase by the window, behind them the setting sun and moments after, seconds really, the orange of the sun had been replaced by flames and destruction and through it all the roses stayed the same, beautiful and unaware of the world falling around them.
War. How she hates that word. Peace had been short lived and she had just started getting wrinkles around her eyes when another war broke out. She knew she was aged before her time. The weight of the world on her shoulders would do that to anyone. War does that to everyone.
By the time the first stars twinkled in the sky she was in front of the cameras, a stern face and a pressed suit while she told the world, told them all… and all the time the picture of white roses was on her mind.
She still believes in peace but it's getting harder to do so every day and that day with the roses will always make her doubt herself. The war is still being fought, new warriors and old and Relena stands and talks and pleads and fights and tires every day more. Her assistant places a vase of while roses on her desk by her request. Relena forces herself to face her doubts and crush them every day. She's stronger for it and she knows she needs to be strong. The word is still counting on her.
