"People are weird when they are drunk," Duo said, leaning on a wall and looking at the people gathered on the tenth floor of Preventer HQ. Most of them Duo knew only as coworkers; with some others he had shared a laugh or two but mostly he kept to his friends. He still felt a little awkward around anyone else.
Heero leaned on the wall beside him and nodded. "I could have lived without watching Une dancing on the table."
"You and me both!" Duo agreed wholeheartedly. He really wished he hadn't been sitting down at that moment and that the commander hadn't been wearing a skirt. "I don't get why they drink so much of this eggnog stuff."
"It's tradition?" Heero shrugged. "It's not bad."
"It's weird. Drinks shouldn't have that texture." He shuddered a bit. Truth was that he didn't dislike the flavor that much but after seeing what it did to his coworkers, and considering it wasn't the most delicious thing he had tried either, Duo chose to stay away from the drink.
Heero had drunk just one glass, to see what it was like, and then refused to have more. Duo wasn't sure if he had hated it or if he too had been traumatized by Une's dancing. After that, both of them had moved to a corner and had decided to spend the evening watching the rest of the staff from a distance.
"You like beer better," Heero commented.
"You do too." The pilots tried to get together at least once a week to have a couple of beers in a bar near WEI. Only two times had they asked for something stronger but usually a couple of beers were enough for all of them.
"I like the company more," Heero said and put his hands inside his pants pockets.
Duo grinned. "Well the guys are always cool. Too bad they all skipped out on us." Quatre and Trowa were in the colonies, spending some time with the circus and Wufei had taken off to China with Sally.
"You are good company." Heero's lips were curved into a half smile.
Not exactly knowing what to say Duo laughed. "Well right back at you."
They were quiet for a little while, watching the party, people laughing, mingling and dancing. Duo was distracted, watching how Mark from the third floor tried to convince Melissa to dance with him, when Heero spoke. "I really mean it," he said.
"Huh?"
"That you are good company." Heero was looking at him. "I like spending time with you."
Duo would have laughed, hit Heero playfully in the arm and ask if the eggnog was making him mushy if it wasn't for the look in Heero's eyes. Duo had never seen them like that before, sincere, hopeful and a little afraid. "You do?" he said instead.
Nodding once, Heero took his hands out of his pocket and let them hang by his sides.
Maybe Duo was reading things wrong and Heero had just spoken as a friend but Duo believed, somehow, that there was more being said here than a simple friendly compliment. "The party isn't that bad. We could use some beers but other than that…" He brushed the back of Heero's hand with his own and smiled. "The company is good."
Heero's fingers curled loosely around Duo's. "Yes."
Duo's smile widened. "Yeah…"

Date: 2006-12-21 08:07 pm (UTC)I love the way that you create the atmosphere in this fic. In all of your writing, epic or drabble, you always manage to portray a great sense of scene. And the interaction between Heero and Duo is sweet and friendly all at once.
Thank you for writing and for sharing - wonderful stuff on such a dreary day. Take care!

(and, in my mind, they head right for the copy room and xerox their asses) *is kidding*
Penguin88 is right, you do have a great sense of atmosphere. It doesn't take much to imagine what's around them and it's nice.

I've been all crazy and not sleeping and behind on everything since I got back for my trip but now I'm catching up!
Anyway,I guess it was not so bad cause I got to see this pratically on xmas day and...IT'S SOOOO ADORABLE! ~♥
I'm going with everyone else's opinion: the moods you set are so perfect! I love how you make the guys demonstrate so much with such small gestures. It's touching and just the little itsy bitsy angst and lovely all around.
Thanks so much, it's more than I could have asked for xmas ^___~
*huggles you*
