I blame this on
windsorblue and
lil_1337, because they said I should write about the mystic lands of Rabbitania, and because, for some reason, I can't say no… In my defense, I've had a few beers tonight…
Rabbitania (A Bunny Story)

Misanagi woke up slowly, hugged the pillow a few times and then closed her eyes again, refusing to face the world just yet. Soon enough, she was fast asleep again. She was no longer on bed, wrapped up in blankets, but in a field, watching Quatre and Heero ride a white horse, running away from at least one hundred dragons that were following them. Suddenly, when they were about to be burnt alive by the angry flames of the dragons, Deathscythe's hand grabbed them, horse and all, and flew them to safety… where Wufei and Trowa had cooked an elegant dinner. They were all wearing suits and ties, talking while they had a glass of champagne. Then, alarms started to sound, loudly. The colony had suffered a malfunction and unless they made the system and mechanism work again, they, and everyone else in the colony, would die. Heero headed for the system control, while Trowa penetrated the internal mechanism of the colony, trying to reach the damaged circuit. Duo and Quatre jumped on their Gundams to try to steady the colony from the outside, while Wufei took all the penguins to safety. At the last moment, they managed to get the colony working again, and went to finish their dinner. They were sweaty, their ties were lose and the shirts fitly, but they were all laughing as they finished their meal.
And then, the alarms sounded again…
With a groan, Misanagi realized that the annoying sound belonged to the real world and turned the alarm off. A little later that day, when she was more fully awake, and probably taking a shower, the images of the dream would coma back. She would decide what color tie each pilot wore, discard the penguins all together, and she would see clearly that Trowa and Quatre were about to share that first kiss when the alarms had sounded, and then, in a moment of epiphany she would realize that it was too late, another bunny was bred.
* * *
The bunny chewed happily on Misanagi's leg, eating a carrot every time she would think of another detail. It was a young bunny, no name yet and no memory from where it had come from or what its purpose was. However, on some instinctive level, it knew that chewing felt good, and that the carrots made it grow heavier and stronger.
Once in a while, Misanagi managed to shoo it away, but the young little bunny was persistent, and it knew that if it went away it would have no more carrots to eat, and it liked the carrots a lot. It also discovered that by chewing on Misanagi when she was distracted, it could make her throw more carrots, and carrots tasted good.
Then, one day, Misanagi showed it to another writer and Bunny, knowing somehow that it was best to look harmless, hid its fangs, opened its eyes wide and twitched its tail cutely. The other writer, who Bunny soon discovered was named Anne, petted it lovingly and fed it lots and lots of carrots. By the end of the day, the bunny wasn't that little anymore, and it understood better the ways of writers.
Once, when Anne and Misanagi were distracted, Bunny ran away and found a big bunny sitting nearby and eating a large bowl of special carrots. Bunnies are very generous creatures, so the fat bunny was happy to share some of its delicious carrots with the younger one. They talked and the fat bunny informed Bunny that its name was "Echoes of the Rising Sun" – but its friends called it "Echoes" – and that it had been living in Anne's pen for quite a while.
Echoes was a very wise bunny, hence its weight. The many carrots it had eaten had made it very smart, so it had the answers to all of Bunny's questions. Bunny looked at the older bunny timidly and finally asked, "Where do bunnies come from?"
It was a story passed down from generations of bunnies, and some even believed it to be nothing but a myth.
There was a land, far far away, called Rabbitania, and it was the place all the bunnies came from. In Rabbitania there was nothing but green meadows and carrots all around. Bunnies of every size and color danced happily together, waiting for the day they would be deemed adults and they would have to prove their worth.
"How do we do that," said a new bunny, coming out from behind a bush. It was bigger than Bunny but not nearly as big as Echoes. It introduced itself as Aladdin, and said it belonged to a writer named Lil. Bunny made a mental note to go find Lil later and look cute in an attempt to get more carrots.
"The young unnamed bunnies have to travel into another world," replied Echoes in an old knowledgeable voice. "In this new world, only a certain breed of humans are able to see us. Our mission is to attach ourselves to one of these humans and chew on them until, not only have they given us a name, but also send us back to Rabbitania by the magical process of writing."
Bunny felt a little sad when it realized that it hadn't even completed the part of the task that required it to get a name.
"There's a trick for this," said another bunny, coming out of hiding. For some reason it had large bat wings. It was fat too and it looked very smug, like the road was almost over for it. "The more you annoy your human, the more likely she is to send you back to Rabbitania."
"This one is Grotesque, Windsor belongs to it," said Echoes, then turned to Grotesque. "The young one doesn't have a name yet."
"I'm sure you'll get one soon," said Aladdin, comprehensively.
Bunny nodded but it was feeling very sad at not having one yet. "How do I annoy the human?" it asked.
"That's easy, if you learn the tricks," replied Grotesque. "The fatter you are the harder is for her to ignore you, so you'll have to try to eat as much as possible."
Aladdin jumped up and down with one paw raised. "You should go to the other human writers. They are usually happy to feed us, much more than our own humans. There's one named Misanagi who's especially generous."
The other bunnies nodded enthusiastically, all except Bunny who wondered miserably why it's human kept it on a diet while she happily fed everyone else's bunnies. Shouldn't she care for her own bunnies first?
"So the trick is just to nag and eat, nag and eat, and nag and eat until she performs the ritual and sends you back to Rabbitania, no longer as a bunny, but as a full grown named rabbit," said Aladdin.
Grotesque nodded and added, "Some bunnies get back home in a matter of days, some others…" it gave Echoes a sad look, "take longer."
Bunny didn't want to ask the next question but it did anyway. "What happens if a bunny can't get the writer to perform the ritual, if it is ignored?"
There was silence until a new voice replied, "Then it stays here forever, living a life of hunger and exile… limbo," The bunny kept hidden in the shadows, as of it was ashamed to show its face. Bunny realized that this was probably a lost bunny, one that had tried and failed, and now would never grow into a rabbit or see Rabbitania ever again.
The four bunny friends shuddered, none of them wanting to end up as the lost faceless bunny.
It was a hard life that of a bunny, but they were all determined to complete their task and return to Rabbitania as heroes, where endless lands of open meadows would be waiting for them.
- The End -
**No bunnies were harmed in the writing of this bunny story. All bunnies are fictional characters; any resemblance to real bunnies is pure coincidence.
