Book Review

The Three Musketeers (Signet Classics) The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I've always loved the Musketeers and the many stories built around them. Having a chance to get to know Dumas' characters was amazing. Unsurprisingly what I enjoyed the most was the friendship between the four musketeers. Their adventures are not particularly interesting but their misadventures and playfulness more than makes up for it. In the end, it's a book of boys being boys, so of curse it's hard not to like.

Book Review:

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (Hitchhiker's Guide, #2) The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams

My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first. The narrative is witty and I liked seeing the characters again but the plot wasn't as deep as I would have liked and there were parts where the humor seemed a bit strained for me. Since this is a part of a series it might be because it's a transition book. I'll have to wait and see when I read the next ones. What I really liked was the last bit of the book that introduces a new twist to the story which I thought fit perfectly in the universe the book has created.

An Archive of Our Own & Book Review

I've been slowly posting my fics in my An Archive of Our Own page.

I still have a long way to go and lots more fics to post but I like the site so far. It has many useful options like placing fics as part of a series, so now I can have Masterminds and College not-an-arc neatly organized in a same place. The importing is easy too and tagging is quite helpful.

Another thing that's really great is that you can add who you wrote a fic for and then the person has all the fics written for them appear in their "gifts" section. While posting fics there I noticed that a lot of my fics have been written for someone, for example, [livejournal.com profile] merith practically owns Masterminds ^_^

So is anyone else using Archive of Our Own? What are your usernames (so I can correctly put you as the receiver of a fic if I have written something for you)? So far I've been using LJ names or personal names... For me, I'm using Misanagi, as always.

And now a book review:

I finally read Picture of Dorian Gray )

Book Review: The Road & Meme

I decided to start posting book reviews. I've been posting them on [info]wales_tooth and I will continue to post there (sorry to those of you who'll get them twice) but I want to keep this in my journal as well.

If you want to see other reviews, feel free to friend me or visit me in my goodreads page

The Road The Road by Cormac McCarthy

My rating: 2 of 5 stars
It took me a little while to get into the flow of this book. I think my mistake was reading it after Stephen King's "The Stand". It was really just a coincidence since I started reading both book without knowing what they were about but of course, I couldn't help by making comparisons between the two.

In the end, though, I managed to get into the world of The Road. I started appreciating the things that bothered me at first (mostly the lack of proper names) and quite enjoyed the tale. It's one of those books that leaves much unsaid. A lot os implied and I both love and hate that narrative style. All in all is a very good read, chilling at times and thought provoking.

Inkheart and pimp

Inkheart (Inkheart, Book 1) Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
I liked this book from the first chapter. After all, there's nothing like a story about books for a booklover. The characters are interesting and real but I didn't develop that strong connection I do with the characters I really like. The story and the way it was presented was well crafted, keeping the tension and the interest in the story. I do feel that it isn't very elaborated plot wise. For a 600 page book not a lot happens but the story still is captivating and the narration works very well. I especially liked the quotes at the beginning of each chapter and how those and the book itself urged me to read or reread some other books. All in all, a very good read.

xposted to [livejournal.com profile] whales_tooth. Sorry to those of you who got it twice.

And let me take this oportunity to pimp two things:

1. [livejournal.com profile] whales_tooth. It's a great book comunity and there are regular posts. If you are looking for books to read, this is a good place. also, I remember some of you wanting recs for gay fiction and Anne and I think Lil have been posting reviews of those.

2. Goodreads. I know I've pimped this before but it's a great side to keep track of the books you've read, share reviews with your friends and get some wonderful ideas on what to read next. You can find my books here, so come on and share some books with me.

I hope everyone had a good weekend *hugs*

Goodreads!

I stumbled upon Goodreads and then subsequently spent the next five hours adding books I've read ^^;;. It is addictive and a lot of fun and I'm wondering if any of you is there. It could be fun to compare books and maybe get some good recs and comments from there. So if you are in the site, feel free to add me and if you are not, you should really consider it.

About the 100 Book meme

The 100 Book meme thing going around is quite fun to read. I get to see what my friends like to read and what not. I've noticed a few things:

1. None of my friends (who did the meme) has read One Hundred Years of Solitude - Gabriel García Marquez. I'm not pimping the book only because he is Colombian. I tell you, it's a very good book so if you get a chance, give it a try.
2. I'm apparently the only one who has braved Joyce's Ulyses.
3. His Dark Materials seems to be a favorite. I started reading the first one years ago and got bored, so maybe I missed something... then again, I didn't manage to get pass the prologue of Lord of the Rings *dodges tomatoes*
4. It took me 20 minutes to remember why Of Mice and Men sounded familiar and a whole day to remember what it was about... and I only read it last year.
5. There's no Stephen King there and that makes me sad.
6. There aren't many Spanish speaking writers there either...
7. I guess for English speaking people many of these books are school requirements, very few of those were included in my school reading list, though.
8. Where's Milton?
9. Where's Don Quixote?

Book and drabble Memes

I'm a sheep, and besides, I like this meme. Still, I'm not sure if you'll get many of the quotes since some of my favorite books are in Spanish and maybe the authors aren't as known in other places. I have the Spanish quotes with English translation, so you can read them. Each book here represents a different part of my life, and I love them all very much.

List of quotes )
____

I know I'm going to regret this but...

Every person on your f-list gets to request a drabble from you. In return, they have to post this in their journal and write a drabble for you. Post all fandoms you're willing to write for. Your friends can pick a relationship, a story arc, a missing scene, commentary! Or pretty much anything they want, unless the author has previously mentioned that they will not write it. They comment with what they want, and you write drabbles and post it in your LiveJournal.

They might take some time, but I'll write them.

Fandoms:

-Gundam Wing
-Rurouni Kenshin

Anything else, you are free to ask but there's a chance I'll say no (like if I haven't seen the show).
